Precautions in Naples

Naples is not a dangerous city, but you should be wary of pickpockets. We suggest not to carry handbags or cameras on your shoulders and avoid wearing flashy jewelry or wrist watches, especially in the Quartieri Spagnoli, or Spanish Quarters. Otherwise just take normal precautions.

Public trasnsportation

The local public transportation system, Unico Campania, serves the city and the Region of Campania. Children under 6 years old can travel for free if accompanied by an adult.

Unico Napoli tickets, called TIC tickets, are required for travel within the City of Naples (Comune di Napoli). They can be used for all city buses (ANM), the funicular lines, the regional EAV buses, the Metro Lines 1, 2 and 6, and the Circumvesuviana, Circumflegrei and Cumana train lines but only within the city limits.

You will have a number of options:

➢ The biglietto orario - hourly ticket - costs €1.50 and it lasts 90 minutes from the time the ticket is validated

➢ The biglietto giornaliero (daily ticket) costs €4.50 and it lasts until midnight of the day the ticket is validated

➢ The biglietto settimanale (weekly ticket) costs €15.80 and it lasts until midnight of the last day of the week of validity

➢ The abbonamento mensile (monthly ticket) costs €42.00 and it lasts until midnight of the last day of the month of validity.

Unico Alibus tickets are required for travel to and from Naples’ Capodichino Airport. They cost €3.00 at authorized agent, or €4.00 when purchased on board of the bus. They are valid for 90 minutes from the time of validation. They can be used on a combination trip with any other mode of transport that normally would be valid with a TIC ticket.

The Unico Alibus shuttle service runs daily with departures every 20 minutes.

From the Airport

From 6:30 a.m. till 11:40 p.m. (Monday-Friday);

From 6:30 a.m. till 11:50 p.m. (Saturdays, Sundays and holidays)

From 6 a.m. till 12:15 a.m. (Monday-Friday);

From 6 a.m. till 12 a.m. (Saturdays, Sundays and holidays).

Where to buy a ticket

Hourly, daily, weekly and monthly tickets can be purchased at tobacco shop (tabaccheria) or newspaper stands. There are ticket machines at many of the railway, metro and cable railway stations as well as at selected bus stops throughout the city.

Validating tickets

Hourly tickets must be validated in the electronic ticket machines on the buses or inside the train/metro stations prior to boarding. Daily, weekly and monthly tickets must be validated at first use and you must also fill out your name and date of birth on the back of the ticket and be able to provide identification on request.

Campania ArteCard

The Campania ArteCard offers access to almost 80 museums and cultural sites in Naples and the Campania Region, including the Archaeological Museum, Capodimonte and MADRE museums in Naples, the Royal Palace in Naples and the one in Caserta; and all of the major archaeological sites including Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum.

Campania ArteCards can be purchased in any of the major museums and archaeological sites on the circuit and at the Campania ArteCard information point at Naples Central Station

There are discounted ArteCards for 18-25 year olds. Most sites included in the card are either free for children or have reduced price tickets.

A 3-day Tutta la Regione Campania Artecard – is valid for the whole Region of Campania for €32 and it includes all public means of transportation – buses, subway, funiculars, trams, Circumflegrea, Cumana and Circumvesuviana trains).

A 3-day ArteCard Napoli is valid for all forms of public transportation within the urban area of Naples is included and costs €21.
