Trekking on the Amalfi Coast: from Scala to Santa Maria dei Monti
Place of Departure: Scala
Place of Arrival: Santa Maria dei Monti
Walking time: 3 hours approx
Degree of difficulty: moderate
The walk starts in Campidoglio, a hamlet outside Scala.
Take the path classified as #53, that takes to a refuge called Rifugio di S. Maria dei Monti.
From there continue along a path called “01 Alta Via dei Monti Lattari” until the a spring called Sorgente dell’Acqua Vrecciara.
These mountains provided the ice, or better the snow, for the sorbets served to the 18th century Neapolitan high society. The snow was accumulated in the wide hollow and preserved in special snow pits (one of which can be seen near the above mentioned house) and covered with a layer of ferns and soil. This procedure meant that the snow could be preserved until the summer when it was baled in ferns and taken down the valley to be sent to Naples or other cities in Campania.
The scenery is dominated by alders and chestnut trees that give shade for the walk.
